Staff Spotlight: Lisa Seales – Program Manager

In two sentences tell us what you do at the Deschutes River Conservancy?

I run the On-Farm Program, helping to modernize irrigation infrastructure and save water. I also facilitate the Deschutes Basin Water Collaborative, bringing together almost 50 different groups to collaboratively write a management plan for the upper basin. Additionally, I spearhead the Raise the Deschutes Seminar Series, to help educate folks about the issues facing the basin and the solutions the DRC is implementing with our partners.

What is the most important thing you are working on right now?

It's all important! We're working to restore rivers while simultaneously meeting the water needs of farmers and growing cities, all within the context of a changing climate with less water available.

What is the most unique part about working for The Deschutes River Conservancy?

I have the opportunity to combine my skill set and passion for science, policy-making, teaching, relationship-building, and group facilitation into a meaningful job and career! Plus, I get to work with a wonderful group of passionate, smart, dedicated people who are all working to make the world a better place!

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I love being outside, in, on, or near the water—paddling, sailing, swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling, and skiing.

What is one thing you can't live without?

Water!

What is the number one piece of advice you have for someone trying to get into this field?

If you don't have the experience to land a job yet, don't be afraid to volunteer to get your foot in the door, or show up to public meetings, to learn and get engaged. Both are great for garnering experience, building relationships, and padding your resume!
